Microsoft’s Bing Looks Nice. What About the Usability?

The new search engine from Microsoft looks nice. At least for the front page, which displays a different, nice picture every day.

What is Bing all about?

The home page fails to communicate visitors what the website is all about. While everybody know what Google or Yahoo! do, almost no one knows what the heck is Bing.com. I would have inserted a nice tag line below the logo, something like “Microsoft’s Search Engine” or similar.

How do I perform a search?

There is no “Search” button on this page or the search results page. You should always display a web button properly and label … Discover more about Microsoft’s Bing Looks Nice. What About the Usability?

How Pet Society Looks in Real Life

Facebook has emerged as one of the biggest social networking website on this planet, and one of the factors that contribute to its success has to be its user-engaging mini games, without a doubt.

Out of the many mini-games on Facebook, one really stands out from the crowd, “Pet Society”. Even if you are not as actively on Facebook as you co-worker sitting at the next cubical, you should still have encountered Pet Society at some point, whether it’s from seeing friends’ status update or invitation from your friends to join the game.

Is Google Quality Score Taking Away Strategic Bidding?

I play the guitar during my free time (that’s right, not all search marketers are nerds). Okay, back to the article.

Recently, I have been searching online trying to find the best price on a particular guitar effect pedal that I am trying to get. I had been through all the sponsored ads and eBay listing and came to realize that everyone is selling it at the same price. Maybe the manufacture had set the retail price, or there is an agreement between all the retailers, the fact remains that not a single one of them has any competitive edge over … Discover more about Is Google Quality Score Taking Away Strategic Bidding?

PPC Keyword Match Types

The choice of your keyword match type can have a huge impact on the performance of your campaigns. Having all your keywords in broad match type can bring you the most traffic, but resulting in high cost per conversion; whereas having every keyword in exact match type can definitely filter out most of the unwanted traffic, but you will also be missing out on some of the long-tailed search queries that broad match or phrase match can bring in.

Collection of Continue Shopping Buttons

On previous posts I’ve tried to provide e-commerce designers collections of checkout buttons or progress bars. This time I thought they will find useful to look at the Continue Shopping collection.

102 website have been looked at during the analysis. There was no surprise regarding the name of the button: 85 websites are naming the button “Continue Shopping”. Only a few of them will give a different name like return to shopping or back to shopping.

I’ve looked at some specific elements - what is the button color or where is the arrow (if any) pointing . I … Discover more about Collection of Continue Shopping Buttons

Google Analytics - Keyword Positions

One of the biggest questions advertisers have when manage their pay per click account is how much they should bid for their keywords. Bidding too high may incur too much cost and advertisers might not be able to sustain a profitable ROI, whether bidding too low might not allow their ads to be positioned at a visible spot.

There is a report in Google Analytics that allows advertisers to see at which positions their keywords receive the most visits, transactions, revenue, conversion rate, and etc.

Simply login into Google Analytics, select a report which has the proper filters applied. Then click on … Discover more about Google Analytics - Keyword Positions

Pay Per Click Payment Options

Pay Per Click Payment Options

When managing the funds of your pay-per-click campaigns, there are two ways to go about it. Advertisers can either choose to make a deposit first and have the system (Google, Yahoo, or MSN) makes a deduction from the prepaid balance until the funds runs dry, or they can choose to pay the outstanding charges at the end of the billing cycle. Analogically speaking, it’s almost like “prepaid airtime” vs. “pay-at-the-end-of-the-month” for your cell phones.

Some search engines accept both methods and some only accept a particular method, and each search engines have their own minor variations on … Discover more about Pay Per Click Payment Options

PPC Targeting Options

Google’s behavioural targeting has become a popular topic these days, and Yahoo has just recently added “Demographic Bidding”. But before we get familiar with the new, let’s review the old. I’ve put together a table of basic targeting options offered by the three major search engines (Google, Yahoo, and MSN).

All the information is gathered from each search engine’s help page.

Yahoo!

MSN
