How Pet Society Looks in Real Life

pet society

Facebook has emerged as one of the biggest social networking website on this planet, and one of the factors that contribute to its success has to be its user-engaging mini games, without a doubt.

Out of the many mini-games on Facebook, one really stands out from the crowd, “Pet Society”. Even if you are not as actively on Facebook as you co-worker sitting at the next cubical, you should still have encountered Pet Society at some point, whether it’s from seeing friends’ status update or invitation from your friends to join the game.

To those who still don’t know what Pet Society is, here is a direct quote from Wikipedia:

Pet Society is an internet social game developed by Playfish. The game which is launched within Facebook has been ranked as the most popular Facebook application. Players can choose a pet, choose its sex, its name, its color, its features (ears, nose, mouth etc.), and even visit friends and bring gifts for them. The pet has to be fed, washed and made happy by visiting friends, caressing it and playing with it. The more you play, the more your experience points grow and so more items become available for your pet and your house gains more and more rooms. Of course, you can decorate your rooms with the things you buy in shops.

Not to get all psychological and stuff, but I honestly believe the success of Pet Society comes from its similarity to real life (but taken out all the hardship, who doesn’t love that?) You get to buy the stuff you normally can’t afford in real life, visit the people you normally don’t get the time or chance to hangout with, and live happily ever after. But how does it relate to our life that so many people are obsessed about it (including my girlfriend)?

Well, I’ve recently moved into a new apartment, and while I was doing some last-minute furniture shopping with my girlfriend, she pointed at a chair and said (or more like screamed): “I have the exact same chair at my house in Pet Society!” This happened a few times that day. Here are some pictures:

These are all real life items that we crave (Wii anyone?), and now we have the chance to finally own them, well, at least virtually.

Why is this article in a Search Marketing blog? I guess what I’m trying to say is, no matter how fancy your website is or how much effort you put into your marketing campaigns, if you fail to establish a connection with your targeted customers, you are never going to succeed. Learn from the Pets.
