Ad and Search Impression Share in Google

Ad and Search Impression

This tip will help you will check the impression share for your keywords, both organic and paid traffic, using your AdWords account and will help you identify keywords you may want to push  either for SEO or PPC.

This is a hidden gem inside AdWords and not many marketers are even aware of its existence (yet). This report will provide insights on how well you are doing (or could do) in terms of search engine optimization or pay per click for the targeted keywords.

Let’s say you’re ranking on page 2 for the term antivirus software among 50 million indexed pages. Your meetings with the boss are meant to show him how great you are, as search engine optimizer. However, you (and the boss) don’t have any idea for how many of the total number of searches your website is showing up, or what is the impression share for that keyword. Are you getting 100% or 5% of the total number of searches? Will you get more impressions/clicks if you push for the first page?

How to do it?

You will love this; it’s quite simple, you will just need an AdWords account. Log in and click on the Opportunities tab, then on More tools link and then on Search Based Keyword tool. Alternately, you can visit http://www.google.com/sktool/ and login into your AdWords account from there.

Enter your website URL in the website input field and click on the find keywords button. There you are:

For Ad Share, the Search-based Keyword Tool analyzes ad logs to determine how many times the ad for your website was shown out of the total number of queries exactly matching the keyword string. For Search Share, the tool determines how many times your website was shown on the first page of search results out of the total number of queries exactly matching the keyword string. Both these metrics are computed based on country-specific statistics. – source http://www.google.com/support/sktool/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=146043

Ad Share is referring to PPC ads while Search Share is for organic traffic. As you can see from the screenshot above, I can identify the most searched and relevant keywords for this client and suggest some keywords for SEO or PPC campaigns. As usually, my recommendation is to test the keywords in PPC first and then, if worthy, allocate budget to push the keywords with SEO.

Additionally, you can use the Google Websmater Tools account to check for keywords your website is showing up in search results but are not getting any clicks.
